Modern
technology
has taken
the hunting
industry by storm. Every year, com-
panies introduce "New" or
"Improved" hunting products.
Every year, we all hope these prod-
ucts deliver on their promises.
Some of these products are legiti-
mate and serve a particular need.
However, there are plenty that leave
you disappointed and wondering
why you spent your hard, earned
money on a "gadget". In this
month's article, I want to tell you
about two products. One has been
in existence for seven years and has
a proven track record. The other is
one of the "new kids on the block"
but seems to have a bright future.
Let's begin with the new product.
Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing:
"The Never Guess" Range Finder. If
you hunt with a bow, you will
agree, determining yardage to the
target is one of the toughest ele-
ments of bow hunting. Is the animal
twenty yards, twenty- five yards, or
is it thirty-two yards? When the
deer walks through that opening,
how far will it be from me? Which
pin should I use? Will I be caught
moving when I reach for my
rangefinder? The NeverGuess
rangefinder answers those ques-
tions.
NeverGuess rangefinders are
worn on the forearm with an arm-
guard like attachment designed to
fit most arms. NeverGuess uses a
touchpad button at the end of a
cable that attaches to your middle
finger for triggering the rangefinder.
When the shooter comes to full
draw, simply aim the NeverGuess
rangerfinder at the intended target
using the sights mounted on the top
of the rangefinder. Press the touch-
pad against the bow handle and the
range is displayed. "The range dis-
played is the compensated horizon-
tal distance. If you continue to hold
the button down, the rangefinder
will display the actual distance to
the target for 1.5 seconds, then
returns to the horizontal distance.
The display automatically brightens
in bright conditions and dims when
there is low ambient light."
In field testing the NeverGuess
rangefinder, I was impressed at how
quickly using it becomes second
nature. The biggest task to learn
was sighting at full draw. The trick
for me seemed to be using my left
eye for aiming, (I am right eye dom-
inate ... I aim my bow with my

Recent statis-
tics show that
as many as
50% of adults
over the age
of 40 have
signs of fungal
nail infection
(onychomycosis). This statistic rises
sharply with every decade. While
not a particularly dangerous infec-
tion, nail fungus can lead to painful
thickened nails if not treated early
and aggressively. For many, it is
simply a cosmetic issue that hinders
exposing one's toes in public at the
beach, swimming pool or in san-
dals. For diabetic or immune-com-
promised patients the stakes may be
even higher.
Traditionally, treatments have
fallen into one of three categories.
Oral therapy using agents such as
Lamisil, Sporanox and others have
been helpful in the fight but they all
carry additional health risks. Aside
from all the usual side-effects such
as upset stomach, the oral agents
have the potential to affect liver
function. This is especially true
when combined with other common
medication used for cholesterol
reduction or diabetes management.
Lamisil, by far the most widely
used, has a success rate of 40-50%.
This may not sound very high but it
represents a vast improvement over
topical treatments.
Topical treatment is the most
widely used method of killing nail
fungus. There are literally hundreds
of OTC formulations. Penlac is the
only FDA approved medication for
topical use. While these medica-
tions are widely available, they
require strict compliance with daily
and twice daily (OTC medications)
for up to 12 months. Even with
careful use, the success rates are
generally in the 8-10% range. For
many it is simply impractical to
keep up with treatment and ironi-
cally, many of these topicals will
discolor the nails. There is a place
for these medicines in very early
and isolated cases. They pose very
little health risk compared to oral
medications.
The third category of treatment
involves surgical procedures to
physically remove the infected nail
plate followed by topical therapy
directly to the exposed nail bed.
This option has fallen out of favor
due to the high incidence of causing
trauma to the nail root and nail bed.
These can lead to permanently
deformed nails even after the fun-
gus has been eradicated. Secondary
bacterial infection is a significant
concern and patients should think
long and hard before undergoing
such treatment in the opinion of this
author!
A fourth category of treatment
has now emerged that has great
promise as it addresses all of the
major concerns regarding previous-
ly discussed methods. Laser tech-
nology has
trans-
formed many
areas of medicine
and is now available to treat infec-
tions of the toenail. The PathoLase
PinPointe foot system uses germi-
cidal laser light near the infrared
spectrum to kill the pathogens
responsible for toenail fungus. The
laser light penetrates through the
nail without damaging the nail
plate or nail bed. It destroys fungal,
bacterial and viral pathogens that
are found under the nail plate.
This procedure has the benefit of
being a one-time 30-40 minute pro-
cedure in most cases. All toenails
are treated whether they appear
infected or not. There is no pain
involved and no form of anesthesia
is required. Patients may feel a
slight warm or tingly sensation.
Normal activities can be resumed
immediately. Treated toenails do not
fall off but simply grow out over
several months. None of the avail-
able treatments for nail fungus offer
an instant cure as they require
growth of a new nail.
The success rate for this proce-
dure has been at least 88% in early
studies. It is important to identify
risk factors that may have led to the
infection in the first place and take
preventative measures for the
future. These are issues to discuss
with the physician perform-
ing the procedure. The
PathoLase PinPointe laser
at Laser Nail Solution in
Conway is the only one
of its kind in South
Carolina and one of only about 220
in the world. I am pleased to be able
to offer this treatment in South
Carolina. Patients are required to
have an initial consultation, at no
charge, for the purpose of making
sure that an infection is present and
to discuss post-procedure steps that
need to be taken to insure that the
infection does not return in the
future. Unfortunately, all insurance
companies consider this to be a cos-
metic procedure and do not provide
coverage at this time.

cian of Laser Nail Solution, LLC in

right eye.) Outside of the aiming
process, the touchpad posed no
problem to my drawing the bow.
The touchpad button seemed to feel
natural and did not interfere with
the "feel" of the bow in my hand.
The NeverGuess rangefinder was
dead on accurate in its yardage dis-
played. I am extremely excited
about using the NeverGuess
rangefinder under actual hunting
conditions this coming deer season.
I'll have more to say about it then.

The second product I want to tell
you about is no newcomer. As a
matter of fact, The Guillotine,
turkey hunting broadheads, has
been on the market for seven years
now. I must admit, when I request-
ed the opportunity to field test the
Guillotine, I fully expected to be
turned down. Was I ever surprised
when Matthew and Cindy Futtere,
Owner and Inventor of The
Guillotine Shooting System, sent me
the entire setup: arrows, broad-
heads and replacement blades.
Even though their products have
been well documented and been
given thumbs up by some of the
most respected names in hunting,
they were incredibly generous and
willing to let me test them out for
myself. Here's what I found.
The Guillotine Broad Head is an
intimidating hunting head. The 125
grain, fixed blade broadhead is five
inches in diameter. Each blade is
razor sharp with one purpose in
mind, detaching the head of a
turkey. The blades are shot encased
in a plastic sheath. At impact, the
blades cut through the plastic
sheaths to deliver the lethal blow.
Did I mention the blades are "Razor
Sharp"? They are razor sharp and
that's intentional.
You may wonder whether or not
The Guillotine needs any special
set-up of your bow to be used. The
answer is NO. Mr. Futtere recom-
mends shooting an arrow long
enough to clearly be in front of your
bow's arrow rest at full draw.
Although you can use your regular
arrows to shoot The Guillotine, with
the broadhead being so large, some
"steering" consideration should be
given. Short vanes may not be
enough to steer the large broadhead
with the accuracy you desire.
There are arrows fletched with 5
1/2" helical feathers designed to
shoot The Guillotine. "Just as you
don't bowfish with your deer hunt-
ing arrow ... The first ever broad-
head designed for use on birds sim-
ply requires a longer arrow shaft
with the world's largest fixed blade
broadhead. A bit more stability with
the Magnum Cut feathers will
ensure target tip accuracy from any
bow setup." You simply sight in
your bow using the desired target
tip weight, in this case 125 grains,
then when you're dialed in, screw
on The Guillotine fixed blade broad-
head and go hunting. You don't
have to be pin point accurate with
The Guillotine. "Close enough is
good enough".
The actual hunting tips can be
used for practice using egg-shell
foam or a 3 or 4 inch thick couch
cushion with the cover removed.
Don't prop the cushion up; suspend
it so that it swings freely. The blades
will not be damaged in the slightest.
Should you suspect damage has
occurred to the bodies of the tip
during practice or actual hunting,
simply send them back to
Arrowdynamic Solutions and they
will be replaced. (The actual blades
are not covered but replacement
blades can be purchased.)
What I am about to say is not a
cliché. You have to see this turkey
hunting setup to believe it. With
that said, let me make this dis-
claimer: The Guillotine fixed blade
broadhead does exactly what it says
it does, IT CUTS A TURKEY'S
HEAD OFF. If you visit the websites
I am going to refer you to, be pre-
pared to see a product that delivers
100% of what it promises. The web-
sites are: www.arrowds.com and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v

.
Although I did not get the oppor-
tunity to take a spring gobbler with
The Guillotine, I have my sights set
on Virginia's Fall Turkey Season
with my dad later this year.
